Her paintings are visual metaphors for all the feelings and subconscious snapshots of memories she has accumulated. Shirley says, "Layering and subtracting is the process I am involved in with mark making a major factor... Spontaneity leaves me space to move in any direction. Undercurrents of color and abstracted elements enrich the process with information, drawing me into discoveries and challenges that are not planned."
